While cedar and natural sachets will make your favorite sweater smell wonderful, they won’t protect it from being eaten by moths. Moths settle in dark places, such as drawers and closets, and leave their eggs. The eggs hatch into larvae that feed on anything containing fur, feathers or wool – even wool blends.
Commercial mothballs are toxic, but there are other ways to protect your clothes. First, store clothes in airtight containers or bags sealed with tape. Shake out clothing you wear infrequently to destroy any larvae present.
If you suspect moths and larvae have gotten into your clothing, put clothing items in the freezer for several days to kill the moths and their larvae.
