Syringes, also known as sharps, play an important medical role for many diabetics and others who rely on them to dispense insulin and other life-saving medications. However, Oregon law requires that sharps and lancets be disposed of in a manner that protects public health and safety.
Syringes used for injection are considered to be biohazardous waste and must be disposed of properly to avoid exposure to others. The needles on syringes may cause injuries such as cuts, punctures, abrasions and, if contaminated with infectious disease organisms, may transmit diseases. Syringes may not be disposed of with other municipal or residential garbage. Individuals found in violation of the law are subject to a civil penalty of up to $500 per occurrence.
