Recently, the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the American Pharmacists Association signed an agreement to help protect national waterways and the fish and other wildlife that depend on them. The point of this campaign is to inform people how to properly dispose of unwanted medication, which can otherwise pollute water and possibly cause adverse effects.

To follow the new guidelines suggested by the organization, start by not disposing of old or unwanted medications in the toilet or sink. Instead, pour liquids or crush pills in a plastic, sealable bag. Add kitty litter, coffee grounds, sawdust or just plain dirt to the bag. Seal the bag and throw it in your garbage.
