Have you ever noticed the frantic scramble for treats at the end of a soccer game? Hungry hands grab dozens of bottles of sports drinks, juice boxes, and packets of granola bars. Many tired and (when it’s springtime in Oregon) soaking wet kids in uniform take their share and, with a quick "thank you," are on their way. But what about all that waste generated by thousands of single-serving boxes and bottles and wrappers every day there’s a baseball game or volleyball match? All that junk adds up. To make your game days more Earth-friendly—try bringing treats that nature has already wrapped for you, such apples, oranges and grapes. Not only are these snack-sized fruits compostable and package-free, they’re also nutritious (think vitamins, fiber, and other good stuff) and free of the additives and other yucks found in many snacks. You can also avoid the boxes, pouches, and plastic bottles by suggesting at the beginning of the season that each person be responsible for their own water bottle. Someone can be in charge of bringing extras in case someone forgets. The earth and your body will thank you!
