Hold the phones! Don’t toss that old cell phone in the trash. With toxic elements like lead and mercury found in each unit, it’s important to keep cell phones out of landfills and incinerators. With more than 130 million phones being disposed of annually, that’s a lot of toxins!
Many local charities accept old cell phones, or you can take it to your local recycling facility. Both Newberg Garbage Service (NGS) and Western Oregon Waste (WOW) have electronics recycling programs and will accept cell phones.
NGS customers can bring cell phones to the Wynooski Depot, 2904 Wynooski Road, on Saturdays, 8 am to 5 pm, or call 503-538-1388 to schedule recycling for a weekday. WOW customers can bring their cell phones to WOW’s Recovery Zone at 2200 NE Orchard Avenue in McMinnville. For hours or additional information, call 503-472-3176.
