You’ve been a recycler since before you even tasted granola and now that you’re a business owner, you’ve taken steps to make sure yours is a “green” workplace. You reward your workers for biking to work. Your office recycles paper, cans and bottles and even envelopes and boxes. A sign on the copier reminds people “Two-sided copies save trees.” And you’ve initiated a policy to send only email memos – no more paper memos. It seems you’ve covered all your bases…but what happens when you replace your office computers?
Our growing dependence on electronics products has posed a new environ- mental challenge: Electronic waste. Disposing of computers and other electronic equipment can cause problems for the environment since they contain such hazardous materials as lead or mercury.
New technologies have enabled us to reuse some of the electronic materials. Clean-up.org reports that in just one year, more than 112 million pounds of valuable materials like steel, glass, plastic and precious metals, were recovered from disposed electronics.
So, don’t toss those computers in your trash – e-cycle! There are programs in Yamhill County to recycle your electronics.
